Space Adventure For Treasure

‘Treasure Planet’ is Disney’s interesting cartoon space version of Treasure Island.

Everyone knew of Captain Nathaninal Flint, one of the greatest, or worst if you prefer, pirates to ever sail the galaxy. It was said that he ship would appear, raid ships, and then disappear in the blink of an eye. It was also said that he raided say many planets and ships that he had the wealth of a thousand worlds that he hid on a planet he called Treasure Planet. Young Jim Hawkins (Austin Majors) grew up listening to tales of Flint from his holographic story book. Young Jim hoped to one day find Treasure Planet, especially since Captain Flint hadn’t been seen for about a hundred years and was most likely dead.

Sarah Hawkins (Laurie Metcalf), Jim’s mother, runs the Benbow Inn on the planet Montressor. It’s been hard on Jim growing up without his father, since his father left his family years ago. While Jim is smart, having built his first solar surfer when he was only eight, he has been a handful lately. This is especially true when two mechanical police officers bring Jim (Joseph Gordan-Levitt) to the inn because he was using a solar surfboard in a restricted area.

Later that day, an alien by the name of Billy Bones crashes his ship and warns of a cyborg coming after him. He gives an object to Jim to protect from said cyborg just before he dies. Shortly afterward, another ship lands near the inn, with many men who tear the place apart trying to find the object. Sarah and Jim take refuse at the home of a long-time family friend, a dog-like alien astrophysicist by the name of Doctor Dilbert Doppler (David Hyde Pierce). The object which Bones gave Jim turns out to be a map that they believe leads to Flint’s Treasure Planet. Sarah doesn’t want Jim going off on a wild goose chase for treasure, but Dilbert convinces her that it would help Jim to build character.

They head to the space port, which hangs in space above the planet like a crescent moon. There Dilbert and Jim board the R.L.S.Legacy, which Dilbert has hired to take them to the location which the map says is Treasure Planet. Onboard, they meet all kinds of aliens, no two alike. The first officer Mr. Arrow (Roscoe Lee Browne) is a rock-like alien. Captain Amelia (Emma Thompson) is a female cat-like alien. (Of course there is some friction between Amelia and Dilbert, with the whole cat vs. dog thing.) The other crews member are an interesting mix of animal like aliens and some creative ones.

Jim will be working for Mr. John Silver (Brian Murray) the cook, who happens to be part human (I think) and part cyborg. He has a cute little pet/friend named Morph (Dane A. Davis). Morph can change his shape and color to almost anything within a certain size, but his usual appearance is a pink floating blob of bubbles with eyes. They also run across a robot named B.E.N. (Martin Short) in their travels (the initials stand for BioElectronic Navigator). B.E.N. has been stranded alone on a planet for a hundred years or so. Is it possible that he knows something about Flint?

This movie has some good music and interesting surprises in store for you. It’s a great movie that the whole family can enjoy. And since this has Marin Short voicing one of the characters, then you know that there’s some funny scenes ahead!‘Treasure Planet’ is Disney’s interesting cartoon space version of Treasure Island.
