‘The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ is part of the
Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. It is the third movie that was made, but it
is the fifth book chronologically. I reviewed the first two Narnia movies back
in December 2013.
Edmund and Lucy had been sent to live with their Uncle
Harold, Aunt Alberta, and cousin Eustace. Eustace was a spoiled boy who liked
to boss and bully others. Neither Edmund nor Lucy liked their cousin, but since
their parents sent them to stay with there, they didn’t have a choice.
One day Edmund and Lucy were talking about Narnia in her
room, since Edmund had to share a room with Eustace. The two were commenting
how the ship in a picture on her wall looked like a Narnian ship, when Eustace
barged in on them. Suddenly the ship and sea in the painting started moving, as
though it wasn’t a painting, but a window into Narnia. The three kids were then
swept up into the painting and found themselves in the sea near a ship. After
they were pulled out of the water, they found that they were on a ship called
the Dawn Treader. And on board was King Caspian and their friend Reepicheep
(who is a talking mouse). Caspian was on a quest to find the missing seven
lords, who left when Uncle Miraz became king.. They are searching the many Lone
Islands for the lords.
Will Eustace learn to cope with talking animals and
creatures that are only supposed to be myth? How will they get back home? And
will Eustace ever grow up and stop bossing and bullying? Without giving away
too much, there is lots of adventure, sword fighting, treasure, darkness,
magic, mystery, a dragon, a wizard, and so much more!
This is great for families, but with the fighting scenes,
it would be best to wait until the children in your family are probably 5+.
There are two movie versions of this.
BBC first produced this movie back in 1988 in association
with Wonder Works and made it to be shown on TV in several smaller segments,
rather than show it all at once. They also combined the Prince Caspian story
with the Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
20th Century Fox Pictures made this movie in
2010 when Walt Disney Pictures decided not to continue with the series. (This
movie is slightly different from the book and BBC’s version.)
