‘A Texan’s Honor’ by Shelley Gray is a Christian
historical cowboy romance. It is the second of three books in the Heart of a
Hero series. This book is told through the eyes of three people: Jamilyn Ellis,
Will McMillan, and Scout Proffitt. The story starts off in Kansas in 1874,
after the Civil War. You can read this book alone, but you will understand
about Scout’s family if you read the first book.
Jamilyn ‘Jamie’ Ellis’ parents died recently. She stayed
long enough to settle their affairs and then boarded a train heading to Kansas
City. Her last living relatives are her two aunts who live there. She has also
been writing to their neighbor who might be willing to marry her. But of course
that changes the moment the train is boarded by the Walton Gang! Now she is
being held hostages along with six men, while everyone else is escorted off the
train.
Will McMillan grew up in Texas and fought in the war with
Clayton Proffitt. After the war he joined the US Marshals. They then put him
undercover in the Walton Gang where he’s been for the last two years. James
Walton seems to have inside information as to which trains are the best to rob.
It’s up to him to find the inside man. Only things have changed with this train
heist. This time there’s a woman involved! He’s going to need to protect her
and hopefully still keep his cover with the gang intact!
Among the gang are of course its leader James Walton.
Walton dresses like a gentleman but can be cruel when he gets mad. Next in
leadership is Scout, the gunslinger, dressed all in black. Next is McMillan,
who plays the role of enforcer among the lower men. There’s seventeen year old
Russell, who follows McMillan around like a puppy. There’s Addison Kent, who’s
a very cruel, maybe even insane, man and is lusting after Jamie. There’s also
another man or two, but they follow orders and don’t stand out from the others.
This is a great book full of action, suspense, and some
romance later on. You will definitely be kept on the edge of your seat at
times. The next book goes into more about Scout and Russell.
